Characterization

Francis Ford Coppola uses characterization quite frequently in his movie, "The Godfather". Characterization, when that director gives a situation where the character is described both physically and mentally. Here are some examples that I have found...

Tom Hagen.
He is a Lawyer that only has one client.
He is very polite, he acts like he is untouchable.
He walks around being very confident, he knows he is going to get what he wants.

Jack Woltz.
A big time producer.
Walks around as if he owns the world, he is truly cocky.
Annoying, a bot of a show off.
He is rich, and likes to show that to the world.

Michael Corleone.
Michael abandoned his family.
He is currently dating Kay Adams.
Seems like he is the only Corleone that is living his life to the fullest, by not being a part of his family. Though deep down we all know that he does truly care for his family. Maybe he is just does not want to be part of the mafia, so he is just trying to stay away.

Vito Corleone, The Godfather.
A very mysterious character, has a lot of power.
Has a big family.
Everyone is afraid of the Godfather, they do as he says.
I noticed The Godfather only helps his friends, if you need his protector, or help from him you have ask him if you will be his friend.
The Corleone’s can do what ever they want because of "The Godfather"

Santino (Sonny) Corleone.
He is the oldest son.
He is a hot head, that ironic because when Michael calls Sonny from the hospital and he says no ones here, no guards, no one Sonny responds by saying do not panic. That is so ironic because Sonny is usually the first person angry or panic.
Since his father is in the hospital, and he is the oldest he feels that he is in charge, he is calling the shots.
He has the most power out of the sons, he gets the most respect of how it seems.
He believes that he will be next in line.

  2. I like your characterization on the characters in the movie however, I think there is some more detail that could be added.

When talking about Tom Hagen, you should mention his intelligence level. Tom is extremely smart and really represents the Corleone family well. He is very well mannered, like you mentioned and he is also very knowledgeable of the family business. Another important aspect which you could talk about is how this man isn't the real son of Don Corleone, b blood. The family adopted him and took him into their home, but treated him no differently then anyone else living in the Corleone household. Tom is treated just as well and fairly as everyone else in the family, even though he isn't really their son. One thing which I really admire about Tom is how he strongly represents familial values of the Corleone family (even though he isn't the real son of the Don).

I strongly agree with your description of Jack Woltz because he truly is a very obnoxious, rude, cocky and stubborn man. He is very obnoxious and acts as if he owns the world.

I also agree with your opinion on Michael Corleone when you said that deep down, he does care about his family. Michael may not be interested or like how is family is involved with crime, but it doesn't stop him from loving them. One thing you could add is how he really admires his father and this is evident when he begins to become more interested in the family business. As we have seen in the movie, MIchael is slowly beginning to become more involved in crime and this only seems to be happening because he wants to protect his father.

I agree with you about how Vito Corleone only helps people who are his friends and it is very weird how he only will assist you with something you need, if you become his friend. In real life, it is morally right to help someone whether they are your friend or not. However, everyone does know that the Godfather wields a lot of power and if people don't become friends with him, he could easily kill them.

I really liked your characterization on Sonny and i strongly agree with your opinions. Sonny is indeed a very "hot-headed" person and he really feels strongly about himself. He seems to be a lot like Jack Woltz because he is constantly appearing to be very arrogant and mean. Also, Sonny is very mean to Michael, but maybe that's because he is his older brother. He also has a lot of doubt in Michael because he is always insulting and putting Michael down. Lastly, i really liked how you said that Sonny thinks he is next in line. He tries to do everything right but that doesn't usually work out for him. Sonny thinks that he is going to be the next "Godfather", when it seems quite evident that Michael is probably going to be the next Godfather.

    Good job Sakina!!
